THE DAY OUR MUSIC DIED!

Q: Thanks for the photos of Peary O’Brien in PM, Russ Knipp and Bob Bednarski (in Athlete), early last year. All three were great athletes of strength and multiple world record holders. Sure enough, none of the other magazines even left a footnote. As well, your Athlete also had a great story on Art Jones, who just passed (Editor’s note—Art invented Nautilus machines) and another truly Herculean man of power, Olympic champ, Al Oerter just died. Thanks for a marvelous magazine that covers the entire muscle world.

A: Thanks. Speaking of Herculean, Mr. movie Hercules, bodybuilder Reginald Park has passed at 79. Russ Knipp held the world record in the press, weighing 165-lbs, pressing almost 360. Bob Bednarski pressed 456 and jerked 486, at 247-lbs. bodyweight, back in 1968. O’Brien was the first to ‘turn his back” in the shot and won Olympic Gold, revolutionizing the event. Al Oerter was Mr. Discus. He won 4 Olympic Gold’s over 16 years, unheard of.
