NO LIVER ULTRASOUND!

I am 41 and have been training hard for 14 years. I had my blood tested and my MD told me he wants to do a liver ultrasound as my creatine was high at 1.2, and something called transamase was high, at 80. I take Beverly proteins. My testosterone was only 495 and he says I don’t need any extra, but I heard 850 is good. What’s going on?

Nothing! Your doctor said creatinine and transaminase. Creatinine is a metabolic byproduct produced in energy production cycles, and is filtered from blood by your kidneys, for urinary excretion. Most up-to-date upper lab SMA normal ranges are now 1.5 units. Transaminases are liver enzymes involved in catalyzing nutrients induction and deanimation and transamination of dietary nitrogen.

These enzymes can run 20-100% higher than the upper limits of normal (50 60), in very hard training athletes, with muscle. Your MD is only being cautious, but you do not yet need an ultrasound, at least until you test again, after 7-10 days of full muscle rest.

It’s the only way to get an accurate test! 850 is a great T level, but only 10% of all males are this high naturally, and almost all are 16-25 years old! While an ideal T level may be 500-600, your T is about above average for your age and training status. When muscle breaks down and re-builds, free T, is bound up out of blood, to support muscle growth. Severe over-training drives T way down. Don't worry, you are healthy!
